Unboxing: Big Finish CDs

Unboxing time! These past few months I've slowly found myself drawn back into the Doctor Who fandom. Maybe not the TV show as much (though I am sort of half-heartedly following the current seasons) but rather the EU stuff. I've found myself really enjoying some of the books and Big Finish audio adventures. Big Finish had been running some great sales over the holidays and I grabbed a bunch. It took a long time for them to clear customs and make it here to the US, but they're finally here!

I've decided to start with the Fifth Doctor's audios. He's my favorite Doctor by far. It made sense to me to start with a Doctor and companions I'm already really attached to, so it would help me adjust to the difference in medium and writing style.

Three CD sets of Doctor Who audio stories

The first ones to arrive were these three newer sets. I love the covers a lot; they look sleeker than the old Big Finish CD sets. I'd heard a lot of hype around "Hooklight 1" and it intrigued me enough to give it a shot. It's a twelve part fantasy epic in which the TARDIS crew gets split up on a mysterious planet and dragged into a mysterious time crisis. (I've actually already listened to it last night. It is absolutely fantastic and you should go listen to it.) "Conflicts of Interest" is one that I actually don't know that much about. According to the description on TardisGuide, it sounds like a fun mystery story involving Five, Nyssa, and Tegan. Lastly, there's "The Great Beyond" which features the TARDIS crew trapped on a prison planet and having to escape. It's the first one I purchased with Adric in it; I'm not fond of his character at all, but the story sounded interesting enough to give it a try anyway.

Two Doctor Who CD sets

The next purchases on the list are actually not part of the Big Finish sales. These two are out of print on CD now, but I managed to snag some copies on eBay. Both were on my list due to featuring Turlough -- one of my favorite companions. "Memory Bank" is one of the short trip adventures, where it isn't a full cast audio but rather a mini story that is narrated by a single cast member. This particular one is narrated by Mark Strickson and heavily centers around Turlough as a main character. That was honestly enough to catch my attention lol. The other story "Devil In The Mist" is one that I don't know that much about yet. But it features Turlough and Tegan, and has the Fifth Doctor squaring off with the Judoon? Sign me up. Very excited to dive into these ones.

Multiple Doctor Who audio CD covers

This next set is actually not a Fifth Doctor centered one. It features four separate CDs, with a different Doctor as the focus of each one. The overarching theme is having the Classic Doctors face off against monsters from the modern show. I love this concept so much. Admittedly, I am most excited to listen to the Fifth Doctor fighting the Weeping Angels (my favorite Doctor and one of my favorite Doctor Who monsters). But I'm also interested to see how the others go. I figured this was a good way to introduce myself to the Eighth and Sixth Doctors as well, since I'm not as familiar with those guys.

Four Doctor Who CDs

This last package was just an assortment of other audios that looked interesting to me. "Ghost Walk" is another one with Adric, so I'm least interested in that one, but it did get a bunch of good recommendations from people on the TardisGuide forums. "Time In Office" is definitely a lot more intriguing to me. I love when Doctors cross over with companions from other eras. "Time Apart" is part of an overarching story involving the Doctor having a falling out with his companions and taking some time away from them. I love that idea, especially as the classic Doctor/Companion teams rarely had deep relationship exploration on the TV show, so I'd love to see some of that explored here. "Thin Time"/"Mindquake" is another part of that same overarching plot. I'd like to collect the full story arc at some point, but at least I've got three of them collected for now. Excited to give them a shot.

And that's all for now! Even spaced out over a few months, and with the extreme discounts of the holiday sales, this still used up a lot of my "fun stuff" budget, so it'll be a while before I can afford to get any more Big Finish CDs. Thankfully, these alone should last me a while. I'm looking forward to diving into listening to these.
